Teen robbers targeting Decatur neighborhood

Some Decatur residents are on high alert after a string of crimes over the last month in which all of the suspects are young teens.

The most recent crime happened Saturday when two people were robbed at gunpoint as they walked along Fayetteville Road in the Oakhurst neighborhood.

“When I first moved here we didn’t have any crime,” Nobantu Ankoanda told WSB-TV Channel 2’s Ashley Swann.

As Oakhurst residents gathered for a block party along Fayetteville Road Sunday night, the armed robbery carried out by two teenagers just 24 hours earlier was on a lot of people’s minds.

“It’s not a good feeling,” Ankoanda told Swann. “Especially if they’re teenagers that look like me. They’re just like my children. So I’m real concerned that something needs to be done.”

According to Decatur Police, two boys between 14 and 17 years of age ran up behind two people as they were walking down the road around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. One teen even pointed a gun at the victims, all for a wallet and a set of keys.

“Sometimes I notice that some of these kids come from outside this community looking for an opportunity,” Ankoanda said.

Decatur police don’t know where the suspects are from, but have been tracking a number of crimes in the Oakhurst and Winnona Park communities since July that involve suspects of a similar age and description. Residents have heard the reports, ranging from vehicle thefts to home burglaries.

“It does make you worry,” Vandy O’Brian told Swann. “It’s a little disturbing that it’s happened a couple places.”

But O’Brian, who’s lived in Oakhurst for 10 years, says she’s not changing her normal routine.

“It didn’t stop me from going out for a walk tonight by any means,” said O’Brian. “You can’t live in fear.”

Others told Swann they plan to keep a closer eye on what’s going on around them.

“Definitely more aware, more cautious of your environment, your surroundings,” Ankoanda said. “Certainly I’m going to be more cautious of my son being outside by himself.”

The two teenage suspects in Saturday’s robbery got away in a newer model gray Dodge Charger. Decatur Police ask anyone with information to give them a call.
